James began his higher education journey at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST)

It was during this time that James took a bold step: he taught himself software programming

Today, James is pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science at the University of Nairobi

The Birth of OPENTVET: Education for All
Driven by the challenges he observed in the TVET sector, James founded OPENTVET with a question that still defines the platform:
“How can we make Technical and Vocational Education so powerful that even a student with a cracked screenand 1% battery
can learn and succeed?”
From that vision, OPENTVET was born — a digital learning platform designed to support students, trainers, and institutions across Kenya's TVET landscape. Key features of OPENTVET include:

Today, OPENTVET is helping thousands of learners and teachers unlock knowledge wherever they are

A Self-Taught Developer with a National Impact
James didn’t attend a coding bootcamp. He built one — in his mind. From crafting his first basic website to building fully integrated learning systems, APIs, and data dashboards for OPENTVET, he has proven that self-learning, when fueled by purpose, can outshine formal pathways.
He now mentors others — especially TVET students and trainers — showing them that with consistency, free tools, and community, they too can become creators

“You don’t need to know everything to start — just enough to stay curious and keep learning.”![]()
Looking Ahead: Redefining Education for a Digital Africa
James is more than a developer — he’s a changemaker. Through partnerships with institutions, government bodies, and tech communities, he is helping Kenya move toward a resilient, inclusive, and tech-enabled education system

His future plans for OPENTVET include:

All while staying rooted in the belief that every student deserves quality education, regardless of where they come from.
Conclusion
From his early days at MMUST
